Here are some tips to help prepare your whanau/whare for the upcoming severe weather event. Please check on your neighbours, especially kaumatua/kuia, if you are able.
In case of power outages:
  • Have a couple of buckets of water on standby for flushing the toilet
  • Keep a flask full of hot water (more if you have them)
  • Prepare some cold meals or sandwiches. Leave in the fridge.
  • Make sure batteries for torches etc, are fully charged or you have spares
  • If you need candles – have them handy – know where these are and matches/lighter.
  • If you have a fireplace – stock up on firewood & kindling (at least a couple of days worth to keep warm)
Outside your whare:
  • Anchor down anything that may be prone to moving in strong winds:
  • Kids trampolines/swing sets/bikes/toys
  • Tables and Chairs
  • Barbeque covers are tied securely
  • Dog/cat dishes/bowls/whare
  • Gardening tools and equipment
For evacuation/shelter purposes:
There will be a hub set up for each of your areas – Marae/Hall etc. Please identify where this is in your area before the storm arrives so you can be prepared to get there should you need to for shelter and safety.
Everything is there – food, water, towels, toiletries, blankets, mattresses etc.
Make sure you have gas in your vehicle.
Pack a bag in advance with clothes for a couple of days. Leave in your vehicle in case you need to depart in a hurry.
Pets
Make sure your dog(s) & cat(s) are secure – safe, fed & watered during the storm.
If you require urgent medical assistance call 111 immediately.
Kia kaha, kia whakataka, whanau!
