Tēnā koe,

Last year the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) reached out to iwi, hapū, and other Māori community groups, as well as Māori researchers and research teams, about applying for funding to help them undertake research on health/hauora issues that matter to their communities most.

We were delighted to receive more than twice the usual number of applications to our Ngā Kanohi Kitea Community Advancement Fund, with many applying to the HRC for the first time. With applications for this year’s fund opening today, we would love to replicate that success again!

If you are looking to make a difference through hauora/oranga research or build skills to support your community’s research kaupapa, then our Ngā Kanohi Kitea Community Advancement Fund could help you.

We have a minimum funding pool of $1.982 million available and welcome applications from people and groups at various stages of the research journey. Even if you and your community have not undertaken research before, we encourage you to check out the different grants available through this fund on our funding portal HRC Gateway as there are options to help you establish the skills to undertake health research or get ‘research ready’.

While applications may involve partnering with a larger research entity, such as a university, research must be clearly driven by the needs and focus of the Māori community group or organisation.

You can visit our website to look through last year’s Ngā Kanohi Kitea recipients if you would like to get a feel for the types of research we funded.

Please feel free to contact our Māori Health Team to discuss this opportunity in more detail. You can call Le-Shan Pomana-Wesley, Manager of Māori Health Research, on 09 303 5205, or email her at lpomana-wesley@hrc.govt.nz

We would love if you could help us reach as many communities as possible by forwarding this information to potential applicants. And if you would like to keep up-to-date on this funding opportunity and others offered by the Health Research Council, we welcome you to sign up to our email newsletter.
