Protect Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Education

Strong communities are built through partnership – not by rolling back commitments to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. It is vital that our children have the opportunity to learn the importance of honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and continue fostering respectful and reciprocal relationships between tāngata whenua and tāngata Tiriti (people of Te Tiriti).

Education is where Te Tiriti o Waitangi is made real for every generation. Section 127 of the Education and Training Act ensures that schools, early learning services and tertiary institutions give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, shaping how our children learn about identity, belonging, and partnership.

The National Iwi Chairs Forum (NICF), supported by a coalition of education peak bodies, has launched a petition against the Government’s removal of the requirement for school boards to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi by repealing section 127(2)(e) of the Education and Training Act 2020.
