PUBLIC NOMINATIONS FOR 2023 APPOINTMENTS

The Minister of Conservation is seeking nominations for public appointments to the New Zealand Conservation Authority / Te Pou Atawhai Taiao o Aotearoa, Game Animal Council, Nature Heritage Fund Committee, and Queen Elizabeth the Second National Trust Board in 2023.

This letter invites you to provide nominations of suitably qualified people to be considered for any of these three entities. I have included below information on the entity, the skills being sought in making appointments, and how to apply. The deadline to receive nominations is 5pm on Tuesday 28 February 2023.

New Zealand Conservation Authority / Te Pou Atawhai Taiao o Aotearoa

The New Zealand Conservation Authority, established by section 6A of the Conservation Act 1987, have functions under a series of legislation. Primarily, the Authority act as advisors to the Minister and the Director-General of Conservation, on conservation issues of national importance; have an integral role in approving statutory management strategies and plans; and, monitor the effectiveness of the Department’s administration of general policy.

In making appointments, the Minister has regard for the interests of conservation, natural earth and marine sciences, and recreation.  This year, there are two (2) public vacancies arising from the expiry of members’ terms, for which we are seeking nominations. We are particularly seeking nominees with skills and experience in governance and conservation management planning.

Game Animal Council

The Game Animal Council is a statutory body that represents the interests of the hunting sector and seeks to improve the management of hunting resources while contributing to positive conservation outcomes, through their functions as set out in section 7 of the Game Animal Council Act 2013.

In making appointments, the Minister considers the need for the Council to collectively have knowledge and experience relating to nature conservation, natural earth sciences, mātauranga Māori, farming, kaitiakitanga, recreational hunting, commercial hunting, Māori hunting interests, and tourism. There are up to five (5) vacancies arising from the expiry of members’ terms in 2023, for which we are seeking nominations.

Nature Heritage Fund Committee

The Nature Heritage Fund seeks to protect, through acquisition or agreement, remaining natural indigenous eco-systems of high ecological value for preservation of biodiversity in indigenous flora and fauna. The Nature Heritage Fund Committee, established under section 56 of the Conservation Act 1987, assesses applications to the Fund, and provides advice to the Minister on such applications.

In making appointments, the Minister considers, due to the Committee’s technical nature, expertise in ecology and terrestrial biodiversity to be desirable, and is seeking skills in governance, Māori cultural values, and land tenure and valuation.  There are four (4) vacancies arising from the expiry of members’ terms in 2023, for which we are seeking nominations.

Queen Elizabeth the Second National Trust Board

The Queen Elizabeth II National Trust was established under the Queen Elizabeth the Second National Trust Act 1977 to protect and enhance open spaces of ecological and cultural significance. The Trust’s Board of Directors, established under the same Act, is responsible for executive control and management of the Trust.

In making appointments, the Minister is particularly seeking knowledge and experience relating to governance, financial and investment acumen, land and environmental management, and understanding of te ao Māori. There are four (4) vacancies arising from the expiry of members’ terms in 2023, for which we are seeking nominations.
